Scent of Spring: Top 10 Fragrances for Spring 2012
Contemporary fragrances (widely available, alcohol based perfumes) of this season, to me, are usually the sweetest and slightly lighter- more of a murmur of scent rather than the growls of winter. Subtlety and office/school appropriate is what I was trying to aim for with this listing. The sillage on these scents should all leave a pleasant trail without being drowning those around you in scent.
I have tried to include fragrances from a wide range of brands and therefore price tags, as I realize most of us probably don't want to spend a months worth of pay on a bottle of scented alcohol.
Here, then, is my highly subjective list of ten fragrances that have been and will be keeping me company during this season of spring in 2012 in alphabetical order:
Annick Goutal Eau de Ciel EdT (fem.)
For those that like: green florals
Recommendations: Annick Goutal Eau de Camille, L'Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse aux Papillons
One of my absolute all time favorites, taking in account that AGs are hard to not love. Eau de Ciel is airy and has an ethereal soft beauty to it, not everyone appreciates it but those that do will love this =] It smell fresh and natural, with newly cut violets and linden. Eau de Ciel is sweet, distinctive, light and uncomplicated- it has a kind of innocence to it.
Annick Goutal Eau de Ciel EdT has notes of linden, brazilian rose wood, violet leaves, neroli, iris and orange flowers
The Body Shop White Musk Libertine EdP (fem.)
For those that like: musk, clean scents, gourmands
Recommendations: Annick Goutal Ce Soir Ou Jamais, Thierry Mugler Angel Rose
White Musk Libertine is a flanker off the famous Body Shop fragrance: White Musk. Being only around 7 or 8, I faintly recall smelling my aunt's bottle straight off the dresser and recoiling at the strong synthetics and 'cleaniness' of it- nowadays I have become more lenient towards the scent, but it isn't anything I'd be getting a bottle of- White Musk Libertine however smell wonderfully gourmand without being cloying and has a kittenish feel to the overall composition. The best part? This coy mix of musk, roses and cream is a total steal!
The Body Shop White Musk Libertine EdP has notes of musk, turkish delight, baby orchid and chantilly cream
Britney Spears Circus Fantasy EdP (fem.)
For those that like: the Britney Spears Fantasy Series, sweet scents, gourmands
Recommendations: Nina Ricci Nina, Marc Jacobs Daisy
Possible the only fantasy I ever liked! While this is still apologetically sweet, this one is a more of the toffee apple Nina Ricci girly sweet then the scent of a fruit punch left to simmer in the sun to make it even sweeter. It smells faintly of smoothies and ice cream in the flavours of the fruits listed in the actual packaging in the beginning, but it tones down rather fast. Surprisingly, after a day on paper, my tester of Circus actually smelt dangerously similar to a fruit based version of MJ's Daisy! Take off all the unimportant adjectives and adverbs in the listed notes and it is actually an surprisingly accurate of the uncomplex scent.
Britney Spears Circus Fantasy EdP has notes of raspberry, apricot blossom, blue peony, water lily, red sweetheart orchid, vanilla wood, creamy musk and violet candy
Christian Dior Diorissimo EdT (fem.)
For those that like: solifoires, lily of the valley
Recommendations: Annick Goutal Le Muguet, Nina Ricci Fleur de Fleurs
Stunning. Sparkling. Light. If someone asked me what my favorite perfume was a year back -when I still stayed in the heat of Hong Kong- it would be Diorissimo. Having an effervescent effect not unlike that of champagne, it evokes all that is melancholic and innocent and leaves a wonderful trail wherever you wear it. To me, lily of the valleys are really rendered into the 'lucky flower' Christian Dior claims it to be as I receive compliments whenever I wear this. Diorissimo is absolutely breathtaking on early spring mornings.
Christian Dior Diorissimo EdT has notes of greens, bergamot, lily of the valley, ylang ylang, rosewood, amaryllis, boronia, jasmine, sandalwood, and civet
D&G Anthology 03 L'impératrice EdT (fem.)
For those that like: fruity florals, sweet scents
Recommendations: Marc Jabob's Daisy, Britney Spears Circus Fantasy
Reminiscent of a Shirley Temple (both the non/and alcoholic ver. ;3) on a hot day with it's pink juice and coquettish sweetness, L'impératrice is very fun and flirty but still remains a little classy. Depending on skin chemistry L'impératrice will come out differently- I know for certain that while it becomes very fruity and juicy on some of my friends it goes quite soapy on me (not that I mind, sometimes soapy is good depending on how I'm feeling that day)- definitely try it out in the counters and spray some on your wrists and wait for it to develop if you are interested in it ^^
D&G 03 L'impératrice EdT has notes of pink pepper, kiwi, rhubarb, watermelon, cyclamen, jasmine, citrus wood, musks and sandalwood
Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial EdP (fem.)
For those that like: gourmands, smoky scents
Recommendations: Prada Candy, Agent Provocateur Eau Emotionelle
While it may not be everyone's cup of tea- those who enjoy deeper/richer and more lustrous or perfumes will enjoy this. It probably has the most resonating personality of all the perfumes in this listing. The citrus and smokiness comes off quite strong- but it balances out to be quite suitable for the still slightly cool but bright spring season. Although compared to other Guerlains, Shalimar Initial may come off a bit thin and more light hearted- it has a wonderful 'plush' quality to it's thin-ness. Shalimar Parfum Initial is what spring evenings smell like to me (or what I'll smell like in spring evenings) XD
Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial EdP has notes of bergamot, orange, green notes, fruity notes, rose, jasmine, iris, patchouli, vetiver, vanilla, tonka bean and white musk
Hermés Un Jardin Sur Le Toit EdT (unisex)
For those that like: green florals
Recommendations: Jo Malone Honeysuckle & Jasmine, Hermés Un Jardin Sur Le Nil
Given that Jean Claude Ellena composes for Hermés it can be said that most of the house scents are suitable for the spring and summer seasons- a great introductory fragrance to the house is "Un Jardin Sur Le Toit" because of it's more commercial qualities of light fruity and floral notes (but made greener and cleaner), it's probably the tamest and least interesting of the Jardin series- but thats what makes it so suitable for spring. It's pretty and soft. Marketed as unisex this leans towards the feminine side, although the slightly dirty green accord makes it suitable for guys too.
Hermés Un Jardin Sur Le Toit EdT has notes of apple, pear, rose, green grass, basil, magnolia and compost notes
L'Occitane Fleurs de Cerisier EdT (fem.)
For those that like: light florals, (not very sweet) cherry blossoms
Recommendations: D&G 03 L'impératrice, Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Cherry Blossom
The sharp pungent alcohol of Fleurs de Cerisier takes a little longer than other perfumes (generally speaking) to tame down on skin; after that it becomes soft, sweet, fresh and girly- in general... pretty! It isn't terribly complex but it wasn't designed to be. It's great for what it is and delivers. If interested in Fleurs de Cerisier, take care to look carefully at it's bottle and label in store to make sure it isn't "Cherry Princess"- it's sister flanker that is slightly too sweet and migraine-attracting- one of the rare L'Occitanes that I cannot stand.
L'Occitane Fleurs de Cerisier EdT has notes of cherry note, freesia, black currant, lily of the valley, rose tree, amber and musk
L'Occitane Thé Vert EdT (unisex)
For those that like: tea scents, green florals, cirtus notes
Recommendations: L’Artisan Parfumeur The Pour Un Ete, Bvlgari Eau Parfumee au The Vert
The more economically viable version of the famous Bvlgari Eau Parfumee au The Vert from Mr. Ellena (aka. my favorite perfumier of all time)- L'Occitane's rendition is more of a straight up tea scent sprinkled with jasmine and citrus and it is more linear is comparison, however it smells much better than Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea, which I should probably mention as the most synthetic tea smelling perfume ever created. L'Occitane's Thé Vert will easily please those around you and will even bring you compliments (from both girls and guys ;3).
L'Occitane Thé Vert EdT has notes of bergamot, lime, cardamom, bitter orange, jasmine, yerba maté, green tea, cedarwood, amber and musk
Penhaligon's Bluebell EdT (fem.)
For those that like: watery florals, sharp notes
Recommendations: Prada Infusion d'Iris, Chanel No.19
Very English. Very, very sharp. Very, very, very dependent of body chemistry. You definitely need to try this before purchasing to avoid any tragedies. Bluebell will either smell like an victorian garden on you or like just rolled in wet dirt... after spilling nail polish remover all over your shirt- however, with both, either sharpness or spicyness will read. This is particularly tempting to reach for on the wet rainy days of spring.
Penhaligon's Bluebell EdT has notes of citrus, hyacinth, lily of the valley, cyclamen, jasmine, rose, galbanum, clove and cinnamon
Although these did not make the cut they were very very close- they were all K.O.ed by their respective mirrors on the list (eg. niche/niche, designer/designer and Hermés/Hermés) =] Without further ado, here were the top threes that nearly made the cut:
L'Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse aux Papillons EdT (fem.)
For those that like: green florals, bright-daytime scents
Recommendations: Annick Goutal Eau de Ciel, Annick Goutal Eau de Camille
Placed here purely because I could not justify it's price tag (EdC - one of my all time favs - was the only exception I'm willing to make ;]). It brightens up everything- "La Chasse aux Papillons", the chase of butterflies- embodies spring.
L'Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse aux Papillons EdT has notes of tuberose, orange blossom, jasmine and lime blossom
Marc Jabob's Daisy EdT (fem.)
For those that like: girly and fresh perfumes, light florals
Recommendations: D&G Light Blue, D&G 03 L'impératrice
It's easy to wear and easy to love, not something that would leave behind a memorable impression but is very "pretty" whilst it lasts. Just a word of warning though- if you don't like overly clean, 'just washed' type of smell, Daisy may not be your cup of tea...
Marc Jabob's Daisy EdT has notes of strawberries, violet leaves, pink grapefruit, gardenia, violet, jasmine, blond wood, vanilla and musk
Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint (unisex)
For those that like: tea scents, clean and uncomplicated perfumes
Recommendations: L’Artisan Parfumeur The Pour Un Ete, Jo Malone Honeysuckle & Jasminw
Like a sip of iced tea in the blazing sun- White Jasmine & Mint is very refreshing and invigorating- as Jo Malone describes it, it's "a sun-drenched morning in an English country garden"!
Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint has notes of mint, jasmine, lily, orange flower and rose
